We were fortunate to work with Lay Ling in creating a custom home that was suited to our lifestyle and tastes, designed well and functional for the Costa Rican climate. During the design phase, Lay Ling listened to all our ideas and provided her expert advice to ensure we got a well-built home. Her methodical approach put us at ease as the plans took shape. Alongside the plans, she provided cost estimates to keep us on track.
Designing our home was just the beginning. Lay Ling managed every aspect of the project from obtaining the permits, recommending the contractor and managing the entire build process from breaking ground to the unique finishing touches. Although we were in another country for the majority of the build, she kept us in the loop and consulted with us when needed. Lay Ling was always available to answer any questions. She certified all the invoices from the contractor and we looked forward to her weekly progress reports and photographs. We shopped together for many of the materials such as tiles, countertops, fixtures and lighting.
Lay Ling worked with the contractor to keep the project on time and on budget. For us, the entire process went very smoothly, but we know that was due to her diligence and hard work.
We appreciated Lay Ling’s expertise, professionalism and sense of humour during this project. We have a fabulous home and couldn't be more pleased with the design and workmanship. If the opportunity arose, we would work with Lay Ling again without hesitation.
We began our communications by sending Lay Ling a few images of homes that aesthetically would influence the design process. Within 2 weeks she got back to us with renderings of a design that she felt captured the spirit of our taste. We had finally met someone who understood the design process but had the ability and knowledge to pull it off.
The construction began in early 2016. The budget was met and the timeline was achieved. The house is beautiful and its a tribute to Lay Ling and the construction crew she managed that built this house. We have rented the house for 2 years now and the first thing renters share with us is how beautiful the architecture is.
I can say without hesitation that Lay Ling is a consummate professional and someone who understands the needs of a client. Having a good architect is paramount to getting your dream house. Lay Ling did this for us.
When it comes to Lay Ling, she goes beyond being merely the best architect and builder in Costa Rica in our eyes. Our introduction to Lay Ling occurred through our Realtor when we were purchasing our property, and from our initial meeting, we instantly connected with her. Despite not being physically present in Costa Rica during the construction of our house, Lay Ling alleviated our concerns by regularly sending us pictures and a progress report every Friday. Anticipating each Friday became a ritual for us, eagerly awaiting updates on the development of our home.
Lay Ling guided us through every decision, from selecting flooring to choosing tile for the walls. The attention to detail and thoughtful inclusions in her designs consistently impress us. Visitors to our home frequently inquire about upgrades, such as the water storage tank, and we proudly explain that Lay Ling includes such features in her homes—she thinks of everything. In addition Jose her husband did all the outside work on the house including a beautiful gate, as well as sculptured lights.

Lay Ling and her team were a pleasure to work with. Our house was very well designed with some cool and creative features. The design process was very smooth and easy, and we did it all via email, Skype and Whatsapp, with very few hiccups or changes needed.
